The Woman at the Well: Finding True Satisfaction in Jesus

The story about Jesus and the Samaritan woman, also known as the woman by the well, is one of my favorite Bible stories because I identify with this woman on so many levels. If you are not familiar with the story, you can find it in John 4:1–26 on BibleGateway

Our deepest fulfillment, our lasting peace, and our true satisfaction is found in Christ alone.

This is a beautiful story of redemption and Jesus love for humanity. I want to specifically dwell on verses 13–14, which say in the NIV version:

Jesus answered,“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Let’s break this down to get a better understanding. In verse 13, Jesus says that everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. This “water” could mean different things to different people. It might represent money, fame, love, positions, or success.

Jesus says that instead of drinking ordinary water, we are better off drinking the water that He gives us. The water of freedom, purpose, joy, peace, and security.

I was once drinking the wrong water. I chased the wrong things in life. I chased being liked. I chased the boys 😜. I chased what I thought success looked like. And all of this was because I was missing one key thing in my life: a relationship with Jesus Christ.

On the outside, I looked put together, living my best life. I was the girl everyone called to the party, the one who seemed to have it all figured out. However, my Creator knew I was broken, hurting, and in need of a Savior.

Don’t get me wrong; money, career, love, and success are not bad things at all. Jesus came to give us abundant life. All I mean is that the pursuit of these things should not come at the expense of your relationship with Jesus.

Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these other things (money, love, career, success) will be added unto you.” Our Father in heaven knows we need these things.

Jesus reminds us that when we drink ordinary water, we will be thirsty again. We will be in a constant state of wanting more. How many times have we heard of wealthy people who had it all, yet had no peace because they did not know Jesus? When we know Jesus, we have everything we need in life. We have peace, contentment, joy, fulfillment, and every other thing our hearts long for. We will never thirst again.

I grew up in a Christian home, and I knew about God and Jesus, but I was still living for myself. One leg in, one leg out, wanting the world, and still wanted Christ. But God was so patient with me. He waited for me to finally come into the light and realize that He had been there, waiting for me, all along.

And friend, God is still waiting for you, too.

Are you like how I used to be? Looking confident and put together on the outside but crying out for help on the inside? We have a loving Father who is ready to welcome you back with open arms. He is ready to be your living water today and give you the satisfaction your heart has been longing for. All you need to do is turn back to Him. God loves you so much.

See, God has put eternity in every heart, as Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us. The Amplified Bible Classic Edition puts it beautifully: He has made everything beautiful in its time. He also has planted eternity in men’s hearts and minds [a divinely implanted sense of a purpose working through the ages which nothing under the sun but God alone can satisfy]. Our spirit longs for a connection with God in order to be fully satisfied.

To put it simply, we will never find true satisfaction in our career, in money, in fame, or anything else we chase in life because true satisfaction is found in Christ. That’s why Jesus says, “Whoever drinks the water I give them…” meaning a relationship with Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior “will never thirst.” Our deepest fulfillment, our lasting peace, and our true satisfaction is found in Christ alone.

Thank you so much for making it this far. Can I ask you for a favor? If this message spoke to you, please share it with someone who needs to read it. If you feel led, leave a comment below. I’d love to hear from you and will make sure to respond.

Till next time, and God bless you.
