The Power of Words: Speak Life!

Have you ever found yourself around people or even just one person who was always negative? Every word they say seems discouraging, constantly putting you down and leaving you feeling disheartened. Whether they talk about the economy or criticize others, it’s always doom and gloom. Or maybe someone close to you said something that cut deep into your heart, that even years later, you still remember every word.

On the flip side, have you noticed how uplifting it feels to be around very positive people? Even when current situations speak contrary, they always have encouraging words and speak life over themselves or the people around them. Well, this is because of the Power of words. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us:  Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. What you say has the power to become reality.

In today’s world, many people use mantras to speak over themselves. It could be to calm anxious thoughts, quell fears, reduce stress, and reprogram their thinking. You’ve probably heard the term affirmations. According to Webster’s dictionary, an affirmation is asserting something as true.

As believers, we have the incredible privilege of partnering with God by speaking His Word over our lives and experiencing its true transformative power. It is vital that we declare the Word of God over every situation we face.

PSA: Would you believe me if I told you the Bible has the answer to every problem that you have? Ecclesiastes 1:9-10

Reasons to speak the Word of God:

Here’s a revelation I got about reading the Word and memorizing scripture. It’s like saving for an emergency. Every time you get paid, you set aside a little and deposit it into a savings account. You never know when an emergency will happen, but when it does, you’re not caught off guard because you have been stashing some money away. You can easily draw from your savings and cover the costs without denting your finances.

Reading the Word daily and memorizing Scripture works the same way. The more you read, the more the Word is stored in your heart and mind. In the event an emergency comes, whether it’s a negative thought, a hard season, or a test or trial, you’re not caught off guard. You can draw from the scriptures that you have memorized and speak truth over the situation right in that moment.

Over the years, having personally experienced the power of Scripture, I have become very mindful of the words I say over myself and also over others. Whenever I catch myself falling into negative thinking, I remember what scripture says and I draw from it. My prayer is that you experience the same freedom & power.

Something for you

I created a list of scriptures to help jump-start you in your faith journey. Download it here, and I pray that you experience peace and God’s love in your heart.

By repeating these Scriptures regularly, they’ll begin to take root in your heart. Through the power of repetition, you’ll memorize the Word, and it will become flesh in you. You’ll start to speak differently, pray differently, believe differently, and your life will never remain the same. That is the power of God’s Word.

Keep Speaking the Word

Now here’s the kicker, when you start speaking the word over yourself, it might feel strange at first. Your flesh may resist,  your mind will tell you this is silly, just stop.  But I urge you to keep going. Press on and see how the word transforms your life. There is power in the word of God. There’s a reason Paul refers to the Word in Ephesians 6:17 as the sword of the Spirit. The more you speak it, the more you will believe, and the word becomes alive and within you.

Are You Missing God’s Voice Because of Life’s Distractions?

Image of an open Bible and a cup of Coffee

In this post, I will be sharing something that God put on my heart at the beginning of the year, and I pray it encourages you as you continue to seek God for his leading and guidance.

After my usual morning prayers, I felt the Holy Spirit impressing on my heart the need to be aware of distractions. My natural response to this was to assume that distractions had to be from social media. I thought maybe I watched too many movies or spent too much time on Instagram. God knows I love a good TikTok scroll after a long workday.

However, as time went by, I realized there’s more to distractions than just what we watch and how we spend our time as believers. There are hidden distractions that may not be so obvious to some of us.

We all have a purpose and plan that God has placed on every one of us. However, we need to be careful of the tricks and schemes of the enemy that aim to distract us from God’s plan for our lives. As John 10:10 reminds us, “The enemy comes to steal, to kill, and destroy”; he wants to steal what God has placed upon our lives by distracting us with things that only pull us away from God. This could be distractions of worry, doubt, anger, resentment, self-will, fear, offense, and so much more.

Distractions are anything that takes our eyes off of Jesus and causes us to focus on the things around us. Distractions only clutter our minds, making us busy and overwhelmed, causing us to miss out on the most vital moments in life, such as hearing from God and communing with Him. Hebrews 12:1-2 NLT reminds us:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.”

Dear friend, what is the weight that is slowing you down? What sin easily trips you up and distracts you from what God has called you to do? Is it fear of failure? Is it an offense you are carrying from an aunt who disappointed you years ago, and distracting you from living in the freedom of forgiveness? Are you too focused on the next season of life that you are missing out on what God is doing right now? Is it the busyness of life that keeps you from spending time with God and truly resting?

In the parable of the sower, the third example is about the seeds that fell among thorns, and as the thorns sprang up, it choked the seeds that were growing. Jesus explains that these are people who hear the word, but the word gets choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life. Luke 8:4-15 NLT

Distractions do exactly that, they choke the word of God out of our lives, leaving us trying to figure things out on our own, instead of relying on the power of God. Distractions keep us from walking in the fullness and abundance that Christ has given us.

Friends, we have such a merciful and loving Father who is so patient with us, waiting for us to seek him first above all else. And when we do, all other things will be added unto us.

I pray that God will direct you and strengthen you as you seek him in your life. Jeremiah 29:13 says When we seek God, he will be found.

Thank you so much for making it this far. Can I ask for a favor? If this encouraged you, please share it with someone who needs to read it. And if you feel led, leave a comment. I will love to hear from you, and I promise to respond.

Till next time, God bless you.
